In this worksheet, students will read 2 pieces of text and identify characters, settings, problems, and solutions.

This Story Elements worksheet is best used as an independent practice to support your literary elementslesson. The students are given two pieces of text to read. Then they will identify the following story elements in a chart:

  • Character
  • Setting
  • Problem
  • Solution

It also works well when used together as a whole-class activity in the middle of a lesson. Simply project the worksheet on the dry-erase board and read/complete the activity together.

Story Elements Worksheet Scaffolding and Extension Tips

To challenge students who already know the concepts, ask them to write their own very short stories using characters, settings, problems, and solutions of their own creation. They can then share their stories with peers and discuss the story elements they described.

To scaffold this resource for struggling students, have them identify the characters and setting in an independent practice setting, while the problem and solution are identified in a guided practice setting. Students could also discuss their favorite story elements from a book, movie, or television show with a peer group or pair.

Because this download includes the answer sheet, we recommend printing one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheets for students to fill out on their own.

You can also make this worksheet more sustainable by adding it to your classroomreading center!打印几张卡片纸和滑动to dry-erase sleeves. Students can record their answers with a dry-erase marker, then erase and reuse.

You can also project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their math notebooks.
