An activity to consolidate understanding of the use of equal groups to represent multiplication.

Use thisteaching resourcein the classroom when teaching earlymultiplicationskills.

The aim of this activity is to find as many different ways as possible to split a number into equal groups.

Students decide on a double digit number (no larger than 30) that they wish to explore. They then use concrete materials, such as counters, connecting cubes etc to split that number into equal groups. If this can be done with no remainders, they write their number beside ‘Feature Number’. If their number does not fall into equal groups with no remainders, they try a new number. Students record the number of groups, the number in each group, a description of this grouping, and the matching multiplication number sentence for each grouping.

This activity could also be modified to exploredivision.
