A fun activity to practise making equal groups to represent multiplication.
Use thisteaching resourcein the classroom when teaching earlymultiplicationskills.
Students play with a partner. Each pair of students will require:
- counters (or other concrete materials)
- a record sheet
- 2 spinners.
Students decide which spinner will be used to determine the number of groups in the activity and which spinner will be used to determine the number of items in each group. Player 1 spins each of the spinners and completes the ‘Description of Groups’ column (first row only) of the table. Player 2 then makes these groups with the counters. Player 1 checks that this has been done correctly and then records the matching multiplication and repeated addition number sentences for that example. Students then swap roles to complete the second row of the table. The activity continues in this way with students taking turns at each role.
