Teaching students the value of money isn’t just apractical maths lesson.

Currency exploration allows students to apply operations likeadditionand subtraction, subitise valuebased on the visual knowledge of coins, and translate the figurative values of money to their literal numerical value.

Through British Coins BINGO, students willpractise counting money—first by identifying coins and their value, then by recognising the coins needed to get the total sum.

How to Play British Currency BINGO

Students will need BINGO counters or manipulatives to keep track of the words on their cards.

Students place a counter on the FREE space. They will listen to each calling card, determine which combination of coins adds up to the total read, and cover the denomination if it appears on their BINGO board.

The first student to get 5 in a row across their board wins.

Scaffolding + Extension Tips

If students struggle with the content, refer them to a visual reminder likecurrency postersor an anchor chart.

You can also use this game in maths rotations, and additional full-class learning opportunities likemaths warm-ups, lesson reviews, and more.

➕ Extend Game Play

In addition to 5 across, play alternate forms of BINGO like:

  • 3 Down
  • 4 Corners
  • Plus sign
  • Full house

Money Skills Group Lesson

Use a single BINGO card and number each square in order, 1-15. Ask students to number a piece of paper to use as a recording sheet. Using your smartboard or another projection device, display a BINGO card and have students add the coins in each square, writing their answers in the space on their sheet that matches the board.

Match Me If You Can

In your guided maths group, give each student 3 cards that only they can see. Using a single BINGO board, point to a square and have students identify its value as a group. The student who has the matching number card lays it face up in front of them. The first person to have all their cards face up wins.
