A fun board game for students to practice comprehension strategies.

Use this teaching resource in the classroom during literacy rotations to reinforce and developreading and comprehension strategies.

In this reading comprehension game, students work their way toward the finish line by reading small passages from a variety of Strategy Cards and answering multiple-choice comprehension questions. The first student to reach the finish is the winner!

Each Strategy and Pop Quiz card has the answer on the back for students to refer to when playing.

This resource includes:

  • 1 Out of the Book Comprehension Board Game
  • 88 comprehension strategy cards
  • 12 Pop Quiz cards
  • 1 instruction page.

Print the Out of the Book Comprehension Board Game and instruction page. Print each Strategy Card and Pop Quiz card. Cut out the cards and fold them in half, creating a front and a back. Each card should have two sides — one with a book and worm on it, the other with a small piece of text and question. Store in a zip-lock bag for easy access and use during literacy group activities.

This interactive reading board game includes comprehension cards for the following strategies:

  • predicting
  • making connections
  • author’s purpose
  • finding the main idea
  • sequencing
  • cause and effect
  • making inferences
  • summarizing
  • fact and opinion
  • recalling facts and details
  • compare and contrast.

Bonus: This game is flexible to work with the reading comprehension lesson you are teaching. Maybe you want to focus on only a small number of the above strategies? You can do that. Alternatively, use all the cards as a fantastic way to reinforce different comprehension strategies! Another idea is to have the whole class play! Project the game board onto the classroom whiteboard and use two round magnets as each team’s counter.

A black and white version of this resource is also available.
