Decimal Fraction Match Up!

At this stage of their mathematics journey, your students are learning how to visually understand different kinds of numerical quantities, and compare them.

Once your students have discovered thetenths and hundredths places, they can start to associate fractions and their equivalent decimal values to see how much of a whole number they represent in different ways.

With our Decimal Fraction Match Up! activity, your students will identify equivalent fractions and decimals in a familiar matching game setup that tests their abilities to expressnumber valuesin both ways.

All About Our Matching Fractions and Decimals Game

This resource is best used in guided math for practice after introducing fraction and decimal equivalents, specifically after teaching tenths and hundredths.

Your students can use this resource in your classroommath centeras a multiplayer matching game, and hold one another accountable for the correct answers (or assign a classmate to track answers).

To play, students will separate the fraction and decimal cards and lay them face down in 2 sections. Taking turns, players will choose both a fraction and a decimal card and turn each over. If they are equivalent, the player will keep both cards. If they are not, they will flip both cards back over, leaving them in the same location. Play continues until there are no more cards in the playing area. The player with the most matches at the end of the game wins.

True or FalseGallery Walk

For this game, we suggest printing a set of cards you can number so that you are able to match the students’ answer sheets with the cards. To play, mix the cards up and hang them around the room in sets ofmatchingfractions and decimals, andunmatchingfractions and decimals. Working either alone or in pairs, assign students to a starting point and have them rotate through the cards (on your signal), recording on a numbered sheet a paper whether the sets are a match (True) or a mismatch (False) until they have completed each one.

Group Lesson

Using your smartboard or another projection device, show 1 fraction card, and 4 decimal cards (one of them being the correct equivalent decimal). Ask students to choose the card that matches the decimal to the fraction, either calling on students for the answer or recording their answers on a sheet of paper.

Change the Difficulty Level if Needed

While working on finding the decimal equivalent of fractions, you might have students who are mastering the concept, and a few who need some additional practice.
