The Emotion Demotion - Desk Mat

Teach Starter Publishing
PDF|1 page|Years:F - 6

A desk mat for students to use to brainstorm their own strategies on how to harness their emotions in the classroom.

Thisteaching resourceis a discreet way for students to share how they are feeling. Each student character in the Emotion Demotion series are very good at expressing theiremotions. With the Emotion Demotion posters, students can identify where they are feeling and use strategies that are discussed between teacher and student on how to cope and rectify those emotion types so that students can get back to the Cool Crew. Best used after the class poster is used in a class brainstorm to collectively come up with strategies, or if on a more discreet basis, conference with the student about thebehaviourstrategies that will work well for them and your class routine.

Strategies could include:

  • get a drink of water
  • go for a walk or errand
  • put on noise cancelling headphones
  • take a deep breath
  • get out of your seat and have a big stretch

Can we get an idea how to introduce this mat to the class?

Hi Molly, a great way to introduce this resource is when you are establishing your class rules or planning strategies for your students with learning needs. You could introduce the class poster version to your class and go over the different emotions, then discuss the different types of strategies that suit your class and school for each emotion stage. If you feel the need, use the desk mats and indicators to cater for your students. I hope these resources will be helpful for you this year.
