Once students master their CVC words, they’ll embark on a new challenge. Your readers will literally one-up themselves by adding one consonant to makeCCVC words!
Through this 11-slide interactive activity, students will use letter tiles to build and spellconsonant-consonant-vowel-consonantwords.
To play, students will identify the images and move the letter tiles into Elkonin boxes tospell each word. Then they will type the words in the text spaces below the boxes.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners and ELL/ESL students, we have a few suggestions for keeping readers on track:
Support Struggling Students
Give students mini whiteboards and dry-erase markers to help them sound out and write each word in Elkonin boxes before moving tiles.
Allow students to use a picture/sound board to identify the sounds needed for different letters of the alphabet.
Embed an audio file on each slide with a reader breaking up each word into it’s distinguishable sounds so that students can listen to the segmentation.
➕ Challenge Fast Finishers
Encourage students to use different blends and digraphs to make new CCVC words, (for example: chin = thin, shin, spin, etc.). This gives them practice segmenting the phonemes in words and making connections.

Project the slides onto a screen and work through them as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks or mini whiteboards.
