Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!
It’s one thing for your students to understand what NAIDOC Week is all about, it’s another to show up and help improve the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander peoples.
Help your students make a pledge with this NAIDOC Week 2022 activity and create a sea of hearts in your school to show their intentions!
Students can colour in this simple heart template, and on the lined heart write to show up this NAIDOC Week.
NAIDOC Week 2022 Theme
This craft activity will help your class explore the theme of NAIDOC Week 2022. You can also use it to generate class discussion about the small ways that your students can help to make a positive change in the lives of First Nations Australians. Some simple discussion topics could be:
- What does the theme Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! Mean?
- How do/did theseSignificant First Nations Australiansstand up for their communities?
- How can we show up for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?
- How can we encourage other people to get up, stand up, and show up?
This activity is the perfect way to explore NAIDOC Week in the classroom.
✂️ Give Them the (Safety) Scissors
Cut out both pages of this template and stick the tabs over the back page to create a lift-the flaps heart. Then, attach it to a craft stick and plant them in your school garden to create a sea of hearts.
This template makes for a bonus cutting skills activity, depending on your students’ ages and abilities.
With adult supervision, cutting skills help students work multiple muscle groups and their brains, plus:
- strengthen finger and hand muscles
- build dexterity and fine motor skills
- improve hand-eye coordination
- develop focus and attention.
And all these skills are necessary to use a pencil and a fork; button a shirt and tie shoes; write, type and swipe.
Scissor skills are brain and muscle skills!
