Teach Starter Publishing
PDF, Word|1 page|Years:1 - 2

Identify common and proper nouns, verbs and adjectives through this elimination-style types of words active game.

Sort It Out with Our Types of Words Game!

回顾四个部分的演讲激动人心的game that gets your whole classup and moving.

To play, students sort themselves into one of fourparts of speechcorners (common noun, adjective, verb or proper noun) based on the word cards in their hands. When the caller yells out a part of speech, everyone in that category is eliminated, and the remaining players swap cards.

Scaffolding + Extension Tips

If your group finds it difficult to review all four parts of speech at a time, reduce the number of categories at first by focusing only on two, for example, common nouns and proper nouns OR adjectives and verbs. In this instance, pull irrelevant cards from the deck before playing.

Help students avoid elimination by challenging them to use their words in a sentence, either orally or written, depending on proficiency.

More Types of Words Practice Activities

We created this resource as a game for your whole class. You can also use the individual elements in this game to reinforce your parts of speech lessons in the following ways:

Category Sorting Relay Race

Split the class into two teams and have them line up in their groups on one side of the room. Lay the sign cards in a central location between teams, and give each group their own set of shuffled word cards placed face down on the floor at the front of their line. When you say, “Go,” the first player in each line will grab the top card, run to the other side of the room, and place the card face up under its appropriate category. Then they’ll run back to their group and tag the next person in line. That player will grab the top word card, run to the other side of the room and place their card where it belongs. Play continues until each group has played all of their cards correctly.

Charades

Use the cards as charades prompts! Divide your class or small group into two teams. Teams will take turns sending up one student to act out the card for their team while you keep score and hand the cards to the players. If after 30 seconds their team correctly guesses the word AND its part of speech, they get one point. Once every student has had their turn to act out a card, the group with the highest points wins.

Memory Match

As a game for 2 players, print two sets of word cards and parts of speech signs. Each player gets their own set of 4 signs that they place off to the side. Students will shuffle the combined sets of word cards and lay them all face down in equal rows. Players take turns flipping two cards at a time. When they find a match, they sort the pair under their parts of speech signs. Play continues until all the cards have been matched.

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Print on thick card for added durability and longevity. Place all pieces in a folder or large envelope for easy access.

To keep the task cards out of pockets or under desks, punch a hole in the corner of each to place them on a binder ring.
