A science experiment which explores the sun as a heat source.
The sun is a star. It is the largest objectin our solar system. Through theprocess of nuclear fusion, the sunproduces light energy andheat energy.This energy travels outwards from the
surface of the sun toward Earth.
ThisEarth and Spaceexperiment allows students toinvestigateif the sun produces heat.
Students follow thescientific methodto conduct the experiment in small groups, then complete theworksheetprovided.
Plan and conduct descriptive investigations;
Collect data from observations using scientific tools;
Record and organize data using pictures, numbers, and words;
Communicate observations and justify explanations using student-generated data from simple descriptive investigations; and
Measure, record, and graph weather information, including temperature, wind conditions, precipitation, and cloud coverage, in order to identify patterns in the data;
Collect and record data by observing and measuring using the metric system and recognize differences between observed and measured data;
Construct maps, graphic organizers, simple tables, charts, and bar graphs using tools and current technology to organize, examine, and evaluate measured data;
Analyze and interpret patterns in data to construct reasonable explanations based on evidence from investigations;
Demonstrate that repeated investigations may increase the reliability of results; and
Communicate valid conclusions supported by data in writing, by drawing pictures, and through verbal discussion.
