Consolidate your students' understanding of equivalent fractions with this group sorting activity.

Getting Hungry in Your Equivalent Fractions Lessons?

Sorry, this game won’t fill your belly. But it will fill your students’ brains with the skills for identifying equivalentfractions!

To play as a whole class, display each cookie jar featuring the fractions ½, ⅓, ¼, ⅕, ⅙, and ⅛. Pass out all 24 equivalent fraction cookie cards to your students. As a class, sort the cookies into the correct cookie jars, according to their equivalence.

Alternatively, use thismaths gamein your small groups for students to independently practise sorting equivalent fractions.

3 Ways to Turn This Activity Into More Equivalent Fractions Games

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your fractions lessons in small group and whole-class settings. Check out these additional suggestions for using this activity to reinforce your lessons:

Relay Race

Divide students into two team lines and show a cookie fraction card to the students at the front of each line. The student that produces a correct equivalent fraction (½. ⅓, ¼, ⅕, ⅙, or ⅛)first wins the cookie. The team with the most cookies at the end of the game wins!

Scoot!

Number and place the cookie fractions around the room in numerical order and instruct students to take a sheet of paper numbered 1–24. Assign students or pairs to a starting point and give time to simplify the fraction, writing the answer in the corresponding space on their paper. Students will rotate to the next card when you say, “SCOOT!” Continue in this manner until students return to their starting point.

Warm Up Activity

Project a fraction cookie for your students to see as soon as they enter the classroom. On a piece of paper or in their notebooks, have students simplify the fraction. Collect their work for assessment or discuss the answers as a group.
