Blending Phonemes Mystery Match – a Phonemic Awareness Activity

It’s no mystery that young learners need multiple opportunities to practise blending sounds and building words. OurBlending Phonemes Secret Message – Matching Activityis designed to give your students the practice they need to grow into readers and writers.

The resource consists of:

• blending mats (containing sequences of images)
• individual picture cards.

To play, place the blending mats into a stack, and lay the single picture cards out face-up. Students choose one blending mat from the set. They look at the pictures and identify the initial sound of each picture shown. They then take those initial sounds and blend them together to create a new word. Students find the single picture card that matches this new word and place it beside the sequence of images on the blending mat.

Through this activity, students will develop their blending skills and apply them toCVCwords.

Help students who have difficulty understanding the concepts by providing them with a letter/sound wall to assist in the identification of the initial sounds of the pictures on each card.

Challenge students to use each word in a sentence, or encourage them to create their own secret message cards using sentence strips.
